What to Expect at the 2023 Monaco Grand Prix
The Miami Grand Prix received some mixed reviews, though qualifying was certainly a thriller. Charles Leclerc crashed out and cost Max Verstappen a potential pole position, with his teammate, Sergio Perez, starting on pole instead. However, throughout the race, Verstappen hounded down Perez before eventually catching and overtaking the Mexican to take the victory.
It was a stellar drive by the Dutchman, as he went from 9th place to first, which broke quite an impressive record. He becomes only the fifth driver in the sport’s history to win a race from 9th on the grid, and it’s the first time it’s been done since 1984!
We were meant to enjoy another exciting race at Imola last weekend. However, as the F1 teams arrived and got their gear set up, severe thunderstorms and flooding caused the area to be evacuated. On Wednesday, the call was made to cancel the race entirely.
The teams instead packed up and drove up the coast to Monaco.
Upgrades All Around
The race at Imola was meant to bring several huge upgrades to all the teams. We would have seen how these upgrades affected the pecking order, but unfortunately, we’ll need to wait until the Spanish Grand Prix to see how it all plays out.
We won’t find out this weekend because of the unique characteristics of the Monaco circuit. Every team will be bringing a high downforce package — not something that is used often throughout the season.
That means we’re going to see much bigger rear wings that can trap more air and force the car into the ground to give them more grip. Top speed is the least important element at Monaco, so it’s all about high downforce setups that ensure the car can maximize its cornering ability.
Monaco Grand Prix Preview
Known for its glitz and glamor, Monaco always attracts top celebrities from around the world who want to experience the best that Formula 1 has to offer.
For Charles Leclerc, though, Monaco brings a curse. The Monegasque has never finished a race at his home Grand Prix, let alone come close to winning one.
There is some rain forecast for this weekend’s race, which should make for an unpredictable competition. A slippery track on the narrow, winding streets of Monaco is always an extreme challenge for drivers.
Sergio Perez has been a standout driver on street circuits in recent years, so keep an eye out for him. Checo won the Monaco Grand Prix last year, and he’s won both the street races that we’ve had so far in 2023 (Saudi Arabia and Azerbaijan).
